...male with chicks
Casuarius casuarius johnsonii
The Cassowary is a flightless bird found in far north Queensland’s tropical rainforests, melaleuca swamps and mangrove forests. Like other ratites the males care for their chicks. Cassowaries play an important role in maintaining the diversity of rainforests, by feeding on fallen fruit and distributing the seeds over long distances. Loss of habitat, vehicle strikes, dog and feral pig attacks plus human interactions are the major causes for this bird to have become endangered.
Average dimensions of the Wildlings are 65 mm x 45 mm.
