....launching into the night
Tyto novaehollandiae
This mystical silent nocturnal hunter has historically featured in many a legend, as a symbol of wisdom. Owl pairs bond for life and their courting, mating and breeding behaviour is very affectionate. Like raptors, owls contribute to the health of ecosystems, by mainly feeding on introduced mice, rats and rabbits.
Unfortunately this can lead to secondary poisoning through rodent baits. The primary threat to the Masked Owl is the destruction of optimal habitat by logging of mature forests with the consequent loss of their nesting sites in large hollow-bearing trees.
Average dimensions of the Wildlings are 65 mm x 45 mm.
