Rainbow Lorikeets

....male feeding female in nest

Trichoglossus haematodus

Rainbow Lorikeets are appropriately named as their plumage displays the full colour spectrum. This species is yet another example of changed animal behaviour caused by alteration of ecosystems by people. Their natural diet consists of pollen and nectar, but they now readily consume cultivated fruit.

Sadly these parrots have been declared ‘unwanted organisms’ by the Australian Government because they can potentially damage orchards.

Average dimensions of the Wildlings are 65 mm x 45 mm.
