Common Snake-Necked Turtle

....hiding in water-weed

Chelodina longicollis

This Turtle is a freshwater species, inhabiting slow-moving bodies of water and swamps. People have given them the unflattering name “stinker”, as they can squirt a foul-smelling liquid from their glands for up to 3 feet in self-defence. Their diet consists of aquatic invertebrates, tadpoles and small fish.

Their eggs and hatchlings are vulnerable to fox, dog and feral pig predation. Adult turtles frequently become road victims when migrating between waterholes.

Average dimensions of the Wildlings are 65 mm x 45 mm.
