Wompoo Fruit Dove

....feeding chick

Ptilinopus magnificus

The Wompoo is Australia’s largest fruit dove and features a magnificently coloured plumage. In spite of its large body, measuring 35-45 cm in length, they are capable of astounding acrobatics when collecting fruit such as wild figs. Their nests are located close to the forest floor and are sturdily constructed from forked twigs, in which they bring up a single chick.

Historically they have been found from the south of Sydney to the tip of Cape York Peninsula. However, most of this southern population has disappeared due to habitat clearance.

Average dimensions of the Wildlings are 65 mm x 45 mm.
