Dacelo novaeguineae
The infectious laugh of the Kookaburra is undeniably the ‘signature sound’ of Australia’s eastern and southern states. It is the largest of the kingfisher family reaching about 47cm and can live up to 20 years.
Its hierarchical family group assists in defending the nest and bringing food to the mother bird and new born chicks. Kookaburra mate for life and continuously occupy the same territory. Their diet consists of insects, reptiles, small birds, rats and mice. Rodent baits and insecticides unfortunately can cause their death through secondary poisoning.
Average dimensions of the Wildlings are 65 mm x 45 mm.
